I've been dealing with an industry wide steel issue regarding the importation of inferior quality knife steel that was passed off as American made certified High Carbon steel. Thankfully because I'm so heavily involved with every step of the process I noticed it and caught it before we shipped and sold any knives. I had changed vendors on several fronts. They wouldn't honor their word and back their material so I had to move on. I also had serious delays in getting raw material on trucks to get to me for handle making. All of this while I've been trying to find a coating for the blades that is worthy of our 'Life Of The Knife' warranty. Now that the dust is settling and we have gotten the last piece rectified I can now get back to making knives for the people. Thank you all for your patience, and help working thru these issues. The best thing about these trials is a far better knife getting to your hands. To go with the addition of premium grade 1095 steel we are tweaking the grips to give even more grip (stay tuned for that), and are releasing the addition of Nickel Boron plated blades across the board. Yes the same NIB that many of your are familiar with on your firearms. The finish will be NIB DARK® and NIB BATTLEWORN® additionally we will still be offering the ability to Cerakote over the NIB in the same colors as previously offered and you can still add custom patterns like before. So you can get the custom Cerakote look with the added insane durability of NIB.
The title Veteran Owned means something to me. As a Marine Corps Veteran with extensive knife use under my belt, I drew on that when I started the company. I made it my mission to solve common problems I experienced with other knives. Sometimes everyday tasks need a bigger blade, but you don't have your Ka-Bar on you when a blackberry bush has invaded your walkway, or you're at the mall and don't want to scare everyone within eyesight by pulling out your survival knife to slay your packaging. We set out to design an everyday carry knife that had a strong blade that could withstand heavy prying, so full tang was a must, a blade big enough to handle a days worth of working tasks, a knife small enough to not look and feel like a machete on your hip, a grip that was comfortable and capable of locking your hand to the knife for tasks that usually required a full handle 'big' knife, and a balance point to make the knife feel fast in a tactical situation. I started with a 3 finger grip, a knife handle that is designed for knives that need a small footprint for everyday carry but allows for a full-sized blade. I quickly departed from the standard run of the mill 3 finger, and designed my own grip with a deep yet comfortable front finger well that locks your hand to the knife. When carried tip up, your 4th/pinky finger will wrap the bottom of handle feeling like a full hand grip. When carried tip down the front finger well lets your pinky lock to the handle while your thumb rests on the bottom of the hilt giving you the ability to make heavy impact with thrust cuts and your hands stay off the blade. The comfort of our handle and the perfect balance in the first finger make our full tang belt carry EDC knives feel fast and comfortable to use for hours of repetitive tasks, and intuitive in a defense situation. Our line of 3 finger belt carried handmade knives feel like a full handle knife. You will immediately notice the comfort and balance when your hand meets a T.Kell Knife.
I'm very excited to bring this to market! We are literally the first and only knife company offering this finish.
NIB DARK® and NIB BATTLEWORN® are low-observable, patented nickel boron plating treatments which offer superior scratch and wear characteristics while simultaneously reducing friction. The color of NIB DARK® is a shade of black and NIB BATTLEWORN® is a dark shade of gray with an aesthetically distressed, modern "battle" finish. NIB DARK® and NIB BATTLEWORN® create a smooth and uniform plating barrier without adding significant dimension to metal parts, increase the surface hardness of the plated part, and produce a product that is superior to competing plating systems.
NIB is a trade secret proprietary electroless nickel boron plating system that is comprised of boron, nickel, and other metals which produce an extremely hard, wear resistant surface with a low coefficient of friction.
• HARDNESS: 70+HRC (1076+ HV) NIB ONE" produces a surface that is harder than competing processes
• LUBRICITY: .30 Low static coefficient of friction without lubrication on plated Tool Steel: .12 Low Static Coefficient without Lubrication on Polished Tool Steel. NIB ONE parts can run lubrication free, reducing the maintenance without sacrificing reliability, cleaning, care
More than twice the wear resistance of hard chrome and four times the wear resistance of electroless nickel phosphorus:
NIB will outlast the life of the part in most cases.
Extremely ductile plating with improved impact resistance.
NIB will not crack and chip like hard chrome.
I get asked the question why don't you use other steels (mostly stainless). Basically when I started making knives I thought about what knife of the hundreds I've used in my lifetime had the best all around performance. I have never been interested in showcase knives so stainless wasn't a prerequisite for me, and I've always used tools and machines, repaired my vehicles, cleaned firearms and built things so caring for a tool with a little oil wasn't an issue for me. The Ka-bar I used in the Marine Corps was 1095 steel, was a work horse, took an extremely sharp edge, cut forever without needing a re-sharpen and was easy to re-sharpen with simple sharpeners when the time came. So I went with 1095 and set out to extract all that I could from the steel. There aren't many steels that can take the razors edge that 1095 can. 1095 is also ductile enough to withstand serious beating without breaking. It throws an outstanding spark with a ferro rod to start fires.
Thanks to your support of our growing business I was able to invest in precision heat treatment equipment. But first I studied tirelessly about the exact metallurgical procedure of heat treatment. We heat to and hold for 10 minutes the correct temperature for 1095 to ensure the steel is in full solution and hardens perfectly in the quench. Another extra step is a 5 hour temper process that includes a dual temper. Dual temper cycling is debated a lot. Most of the debate against it comes from companies that don't want to invest the time in doing it because it cost time and time is money. All I can say is that my blades durability and edge retention sky-rocketed when I started dual tempering. I have to guarantee a consistent unequaled blade performance. A proper heat treatment shows immediately when you cut with our blades, you'll notice instantly how sharp they are and how long they keep the edge. Its no magic but it does take far longer to make a blade the right way. I simply will not put my name on a blade that isn't built to the best of my ability. T.Kell Knives are carried in Battle by our warriors, by first responders, LEOS, and many other professions that we depend on for our safety and protection. Many hunters, fishers, outdoors folk, providers, workers, subsistence livers, and so many more people groups use our knives for tasks that literally depend on a knife for survival, protection, and food preparation. I make a knife that you can depend on for life no questions asked, and that means something to me. 1095 is one of the best steels for a knife in the world. Many knife makers have relied on this workhorse steel for decades. A good tool uses good material and is designed to preform for a specific task. I build tools for work...hard work.
Yes the sheath is very important. We designed our sheath completely different than everyone else. We know we keep saying that but honestly other knives didn't make sense to us so we made what made sense. The unique style sheath
IF you're not a fan of horizontal carry we developed a vertical mount that you can add to your order that.
Whatever your carry style we have you covered. Like all T.Kell products the possibilities to customize your knife exist in the sheath options too.
IF you care about the Blade like we do then you care about its performance for life. We warranty it for life so it needs to be able to back that up. Keeping an edge is very important to us. But how do you sharpen a hardened knife quickly to a razor and not ruin the temper? We take the extra time to temper twice to give you a durable blade so why would we risk the temper by grinding our edge on a belt like everyone else? Sharpening on a belt or similar abrasive material causes a spark. A yellow spark is 1800+ degrees. Even if you don't see a spark, extensive published research supports that the abrasive material all belts are made from superheats the steel at the point of sharpening. The temperature we temper is between 400-600 degrees. You tell me if the edge is compromised at 3 times the tempering temperature? The sharpener we developed is made form a material that is nearly as hard as diamond, produces no heat, no spark, turns at a very slow speed to keep everything nice and cool, but removes material equally as fast as the common belt sharpening method used by most every knife company. Again we couldn't find what we wanted and didn't care about what everyone else is doing, so we had to make it. This sharpening system is a huge part of the reason we can offer the Nickel Boron blade coating that no one else has been able to. The NiB is so hard that it normally would produce too much heat on a typical mechanical sharpener and ruin the blade hardness. Or it took too long for them to sharpen. We wont name drop but factually some other major companies tried NiB and couldn't get it to work with their current sharpening methods and still allow them to make more money. We will take home less money per knife to produce a product that last for life, and hopefully you'll get your next knife from us. We know that making a knife that has a warrantee for life and actually holds up that long doesn't make much business sense, but our name on every blade means something to us. We cracked the code on the sharpening and that's why we offer lifetime sharpening. If you're an at home hand sharpener you'll have no problems sharpening our blades if you so choose. We can just do it in seconds for you. Click the contact button and get started on sending us your blade for a tune up.
Our 'Life Of The Knife' warranty is pretty simple. If we ever made it no matter how long ago we did make it, and you destroy it doing things a knife is not intended to do, break it doing things a knife is supposed to do, blow it up, melt it in fire, shoot missiles at it, whatever you could do to reduce it's functionality. We will repair, replace, rebuild your knife no matter what. The only cost to you will be trying to cope without your trusted sidekick until it returns home. We can offer this warranty because we know how to build a knife that will last for generations. Can't sharpen your knife? We will do that too...for life. Use our contact tab to get started and you'll be on a very very very short list of warranty seekers. Claims are extremely rare but we always honor them.
